kratom strains

Red, green and white

Red vein kratom effects primarily include sedation, relaxation and pain relief.

Green vein kratom is a little more stimulating than red strains and its effects last longer. It can lighten the mood and brighten the spirit. It is the perfect choice for anyone seeking energy, such as sportsmen and people doing physically demanding work. Some users claim that this strain helps them manage anxiety and depression. White vein kratom is good for energy boost and mood elevation, and typically is the most stimulating. After ingesting most of the strains, you will experience light euphoria.

These, however, are not hard and fast rules. An important consideration is that everyone reacts differently to different substances, so the proper dosage of kratom and how long the effects last will vary from person to person. The best advice for a beginner would be to try each of the basic strains separately. Experiment to see what you like, what helps your issues and what works best for you.

Note: The colour indicated in the name is given from the colour of the vein of the leaf before being de-veined and powdered.

Yellow, gold, bentuangie, blends

Yellow/gold is not a vein colour but rather a drying technique. Most people describe the effects of a yellow to be somewhere in between a white/green, and a gold to be somewhere in between a green/red.

Bentuangie refers to kratom that has undergone a fermenting process. Like yellow, bentuangie can be made from any vein colour, i.e. red, green and white. Bentuangie is much darker in colour, has a distinct taste and stronger effects.

Purple usually refers to a blend, consisting of many different strains (typically 8) and including all three basic colours. You can also easily make your own blends. For instance, some people find a white vein kratom too stimulating. Mixing it with a red creates a blend that is less energising than a pure white and provides additional pain relief. It is also possible to mix kratoms of a single colour together (for instance a red Bali and a red Thai) to highlight the best qualities of each strain in the blend.

Characteristics by region

The name of the colour always refers to the country and ‘region’ where the kratom is grown, e.g. red Thai.

The most common names are: Bali, Malaysia, Indo, Thai, Sumatra, Sunda, Vietnam, Hulu Kappus, Kali, Borneo, Papua, Riau, Cambodia. Maeng Da kratom is one of the most well known forms of kratom, the name of which does not refer to a region, as it originated in Thailand. This cultivated kratom is rejected by some users, while others refer to it as the best one they have ever tried. Maeng Da is distinguished by its high alkaloid content, dark green leaves (compared to non-cultivated varieties) and dark powder once it is crushed.

Description of characteristics of some popular kratom strains by region

Green Bali

The effects of the Bali kratom are relaxing, stimulating and energising. Bali in a small dose is sufficient for stimulation, while in a high dose it causes sedation. For a new user, the kratom effects can last around 5–6 hours. Experienced users may feel the effects for around 3 hours.

Red Bali

Due to its sedative effects, red Bali is most commonly used for pain relief.

Green Malaysian

This kratom is very popular for its long-lasting stimulating and euphoric effects, as well as for its more appealing flavour, compared to other strains.

Kratom Thai

Kratom Thai is popular for its stimulating effects. Plenty of users take it as a sexual stimulant. Since the cultivation of Mitragyna speciosa was banned in Thailand from 1943 to 2013, the Thai variety is grown in other countries, such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

If you are not sure which type of kratom to try first, Bali or Malaysia could be a good choice. Maeng Da may be a bit too strong in the beginning. Each supplier usually offers all the basic strains.

Is it working yet?

Kratom can be subtle, so it is hard to predict exactly what to expect, especially when you are a newbie to kratom. Take it easy and do not have any huge expectations in the beginning of your kratom consumption experience. From my own experience, I can recommend that you just try and see. If you are new to Kratom, you may have to do some trial and error initially before you achieve the best dose that works for you. Once you figure it out, it will all pay off.
